Reference Point

A reference point is the point to which other things are compared or referred to. It comes from navigation sciences where the north star gives people bearings.

Reference points give us bearings when we work with concepts, like ‘Moving Forward’. ‘Realities’. ‘Ideals’. Or ‘Good’.

Because any concept can mean different things to different people in their own life. For Renee a ‘good morning’ involves “getting up by sunrise and doing yoga”. For Ms. Mama Mae it involves “chatting to the postie at her front door”. And for her postie it might be “to get delivery round done asap and clock out”.

That’s why we believe reference points need to be tangible – something that can be seen with the bare eye. So people and professionals can look at the same thing. And start to compare reference points and debate what’s good for whom.
